Google is a marvellous place to start to explore those new ideas. Beware though, Google can be an absorbing distraction. In that mode, I explored “What is the most important word in marketing?” Words that came out of that search included; test, track, adjust, manoeuvre, strategic leverage, new, why, customer, listening, results, respect, authenticity, passion, trust, experience, open, truth, location, content, why, word of mouth, emotion and many more.

The list is endless, and all these words are important but there was a word missing from my Googling.

That word is integrate

The Cambridge definition of integrate is to “combine two or more things in order to become more effective” (Cambridge University Press, 2019)

In the course of studying towards a B.Sc (Hons) degree I first encountered the word integrate in calculus. For years after graduation, I avoided the word whenever I could!

I grew up playing team-sports. The “combining things to become more effective” was a key learning. The word is not often used on the sports field but the concept is applicable.

Recently I went through a personal brand building process and decided that the by-line of “integrating interdependence and brand strategy” best described my philosophy on marketing, business and leadership.

I have now started formally studying the marketing issues of the day with a BPhil (Honours) Degree in Marketing Management. Hence the current reading campaign! And the taking up of the Google distractions!

Bruce Springsteen describes it far better. “For me, once I count the band in, and I delve deep into my song, I feel a certain sort of integrity and integration that I rarely find in my daily life”. It is talent & and vision, inspiration & the message, knowledge, skills and hard work seamlessly combined that creates that integrated moment Springsteen describes.

David Packard, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard is famously quoted as saying “Marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department”. That is today, even more the case.

In the modern world every individual has a role to play in the message extended by your brand. Whether that is the Chief Executive presenting the company results to investors, a Marketing Director talking to the press about a crisis incident or a Senior Executive talking to his friends about the company’s most recent Facebook campaign, each touchpoint creates an impression. Each person must say the same thing, in the same style, with the same awareness and understanding to create a consistent impression.

Equally, every touchpoint contributes to the brand success. From the impression created by the Company LinkedIn page, to the innovation of the new product launch, through to the driving behaviour of a company delivery truck vehicle and to the impression created by the reception area at your factory, every company message conveys an impression about your brand. The message that is heard must convey a consistent & singular message.

It is critically important that many things “combine in order to become more effective”. All communications must be integrated.

Hence my opening line that integrate is the most important word in marketing today.

Every message must be communicated as one

It applies is a multiplicity of way.

Integration of strategy, tactics, culture, vision, operational and day to day activities. It becomes impossible for the thinkers to invent that strategy and the doers to implement it with their own voice. The two must act as one.

It is important to integrate the content; to be consistent, to say the same thing, whatever the message, whatever the platform, whatever the occasion, however the delivery.

Integrate the communication channels, whether online or offline, retail, B2B or F2F. The brand must say the same thing in the same style with the same voice, whatever the channel.

Integrate all the technologies whether desktop, laptop, mobile or tablet, Apple, Windows or Android, new gadgets or traditional media. Sensors and trackers will soon become a part of our daily lives. Whatever the device or technology the prospect is using, he must hear the same message.

Integrate the people. A wider group is involved with presenting the company/brand than ever before. For the company, everyone is presenting the brand; Frontline service staff, finance, operations, production, sales and marketing. At work and in a private capacity. There is now a convenient platform (social media) to air the views. And of course, word of mouth or influencers play as important a role as ever.

Integration of aesthetics. Your brand must have the same visual and emotional feel, whatever the activity. From the exact colour of the logo on the delivery truck, to the packaging used to represent the brand, to the tone of voice used by the receptionist at the front desk to the tone of the Chairman’s address to a workshop, it must carry the same feel.

All multimedia components must be integrated. Integrated across the written word in whitepapers, blogs, posts, emails and messages, in images, infographics and webinars and video.

Integration of success. Many people in the organisation will see the campaign activities. Clear and transparent success gaols must be established upfront and all should know the objectives. Sales are the obvious targets, but awareness or response is. When you do achieve success, the full team should know it is indeed so.

Conclusion

The team representing your brand is bigger and more representative than ever before. The communication channels are wider than ever before. Marketing is too important to be left to one department. It is critical to activate the full team behind the brand, its value and its visions, in a focused, single-minded and integrated way,

And hence the importance of the word integrate in marketing today.

About Garth Sutherland

Garth Sutherland has an extensive multicultural understanding.

He has worked with local brands (creating independent strategic positions) and international brands (integrating the international brand vision with the local demand to optimize the “on the ground” brand presence).
